Portraits at Kindy

Sasha

One day we decided to do something new with our drawing.

We projected onto a piece of A2 paper a photo of the face of one of the children. The intention was for the child to draw on his/her projected face using pencil.

We quickly realised that this was a totally new idea for the children and so Toyah sat down and worked alongside each child talking through the process as she went. (We call this scaffolding.)

On another day we introduced charcoal which we found to be quite successful because it was darker than pencil and it smudges which results in great shading.

Lots of children were interested in the process and drew their portrait alongside and adult.

Now some of the children are drawing on their own without an adult alongside.
